Job Description and Duties

The Department of Financial Protection and Innovation is recruiting for one, Permanent, Full-time Accountant Trainee position within the Division of Administration's Travel/Accounts Payable/Payroll Distribution Unit. This position is to be located in the Sacramento office. This recruitment may be used to fill subsequent vacancies of this position within the next 180 days.

Under the close supervision of the Accounting Administrator I (Supervisor) of the Travel/Accounts Payable/Payroll (TAPP) Unit, the Accountant Trainee is learning and performing with the required skills and knowledge to be able to perform at the higher level independently. They are responsible for performing semi-professional accounting duties, which require an understanding of accounting processes and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

The incumbent will perform a variety of accounting duties including, but are not limited to: the timely and accurate payment of invoices and travel claims, answering employees’ inquiries concerning travel-related issues, and recognizing and ensuring that audit and internal control procedures are followed. The incumbent will utilize FI$Cal system, CalATERS, databases, and spreadsheets.

Minimum Qualifications

Either 1

Equivalent to graduation from college, with specialization in accounting. (Registration as a Senior Student in a recognized institution will admit applicants to the examination, but they must produce evidence of successful completion of the curriculum and the prescribed courses before they may be considered eligible for appointment.)

Or 2

Completion of a prescribed professional accounting curriculum given by a residence or correspondence school of accountancy, including courses in elementary and advanced accounting, auditing, cost accounting and business law.

Or 3

Completion of the equivalent of 19 semester hours of course work; 16 hours of which shall be professional accounting courses given by a collegiate-grade residence institution, including courses in elementary and advanced accounting, auditing, and cost accounting; and three semester hours of business law.

(Persons who will complete work requirements outlined under II and III above during the current quarter or semester will be admitted to the examination, but they must produce evidence of successful completion of the curriculum and the prescribed courses before they may be considered eligible for appointment.) Successful completion of the State Fund Accounting Course administered by the Department of Finance, shall receive credit for three semester hours toward the required accounting courses.
