Part-Time After School ASL Instructor

Program: American Sign Language 1

Location: Oakland, CA 
Duration: September 8 - January 19

Schedule: Tuesdays 3:00 - 4:00 PM 
Type: In-person

Pay: $20 - $35

Are you passionate about American Sign Language and enjoy helping young people learn something new? Whizara is looking for an enthusiastic Part-Time ASL 1 Instructor to lead an engaging after-school program for middle school students in Oakland.

This is an opportunity to introduce students to the fundamentals of ASL while helping them build communication skills, confidence, cultural awareness, and an appreciation for different ways of connecting with others.
 

What You'll Do

  • Create a safe classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Be punctual, reliable and efficient to run an effective class.
  • Follow curriculum, set student's goals, motivate and guide students to provide an enjoyable learning experience.
  • Monitor student progress, advise students and provide feedback and support to students as required to meet student outcomes and course objectives.
  • Work effectively with students, teachers and parents to achieve course goals.
  • Provide feedback from classroom experience into curriculum development, instructional methods, objectives and philosophy.
  • Maintain an organized and clean classroom environment.
  • Work independently and be a self-starter.
  • Communicate via email and phone with us as needed.
     

What We're Looking For

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree (or currently pursuing one) in Deaf Studies, Special Education, Linguistics, Education, or a related field.
  • Current undergraduate or graduate students are encouraged to apply.
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of American Sign Language and the ability to teach beginner-level ASL.
  • Previous teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or experience working with K–12 students is preferred.
  • Strong communication and classroom management skills.
  • Patient, energetic, dependable, and passionate about working with children.
