Peer Guide

Description

Peer Guides are student employees through the counseling division who provide support, information, and referrals to students, and they can understand their needs by actively listening, asking supportive questions, and guiding students to resources.

There may be opportunities to be a Peer Guide at the Welcome Center, Counseling Center, or Career & Transfer Center.

Start date will be sometime before start of fall semester.

Duties & Responsibilities

Help students and prospective students with various questions:

  • General campus information
  • Navigating our online systems
  • Registration process
  • Referrals to campus resources/programs
  • Other

Complete projects/assignments that can range from a variety of tasks such as assisting with events, tabling, conducting outreach phone calls, facilitating campus tours, reviewing resources, developing resources, administrative tasks, and more.

Minimum Qualifications  

  • Able to work between 8-16 hrs/week
  • Have been a Chabot student for at least 1 semester
  • Have a positive attitude and enjoy helping others

Necessary Experience or Ability  

  • Possess strong communication and organizational skills and be detail-oriented
  • Able to communicate with a diverse population of students effectively and with sensitivity
  • Knowledgeable of Chabot services, resources, and programs: Admissions & Records, Financial Aid, Disabled Students Resource Center, Health Center, CARES (Mental Health Services), WRAC, STEM Center, Learning Connection, Special Programs and other support services at Chabot College
  • Able to work accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced environment with minimum supervision (ie. setting up ESL Orientation, assembling folders, responding to telephone and e-mails, providing appointment reminders, opening and closing the Career and Transfer Center, providing campus tours and outreach)
  • Able to clearly explain Chabot programs, procedures, and provide access to appropriate forms
  • Possess thorough understanding of Chabot’s website content and be able to quickly access and provide students with information
  • Possess thorough understanding of CLASS-Web content and be able to quickly access information and guide students in navigating the site
  • Able to empathize with students having a variety of challenges
  • Able to provide direct support, appropriate referrals, and directions to campus resources
  • Able to hold student information, conversations, and records with confidentiality (FERPA)

Preferred Experience or Training

  • Student service or customer service experience
  • Clear and professional writing ability
  • Comfortable speaking in front of large groups (ie. giving campus tours, making presentations, providing outreach)
  • Experience working at large events (ie. set-up and break-down, providing directions and information to students)
  • Experience working in high traffic environments
