STUDENT ASSISTANT – SAN LUIS OBISPO COAST DISTRICT / HEARST SAN SIMEON STATE HISTORICAL MONUMENT / HEARST CASTLE
Job Description and Duties
The reporting location for this position is the Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument. This position will work under the supervision of Hearst Castle's Museum Director and working directly with the District Maintenance Chief, Curator I, and Guide Supervisors.
The Student Assistant participates in Hearst Castle's Internship Program and supports the implementation of Hearst Castle's mission and strategic plan priorities. The Student Assistant will receive experience in interpretation in the Guide Department guarding tours and interpreting the Castle's collections, working with the Grounds Department to learn techniques to care for the historic landscape and gardens, and in the Collections Management Department learning to care for museum objects. This internship provides on-the-job instruction and training; introduction to policies, procedures, and techniques; experience performing tasks which are valuable and necessary to provide practical experience in the technical duties required by the Guide, Collections, and Grounds Departments. This internship is designed to give college students experience in the Historic Museum field.
Working in the interior and exteriors of historic structures around historic artifacts. Exposed to cleaning products, chemicals, dirt, mold, fumes, unpleasant odors, loud noises, and waste from rodents and other pests. Schedule is based on operational need and may change at any time. Typical hours are 6:30am to 3:00pm and may include work on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, and at odd or irregular hours, and under adverse weather conditions (extreme heat, high winds, and rain). Must adhere to departmental uniform requirements. Outdoor work is common. This position is designated as not telework eligible.
The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

Working Conditions
Incumbent/applicant will need to be able to perform the essential job functions (duties) of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. Requires the ability to access all areas of the facility throughout the workday, climb four floors approximately five times per day, lift up to 35 pounds, and climb a six-foot ladder. Daily duties require incumbent to stand, sit, and walk with repetitive leg and arm movements and constant hand grasping and finger dexterity, may occasionally bend, reach forward and overhead, squat, and kneel. Frequent and prolonged periods of standing, walking, and sitting. Requires moderate physical work; moderate lifting, pushing, or pulling.
