Program Technician (Optical)

When joining state service in a full-time position, in your first 12 months you will earn a MINIMUM of 156 PAID leave hours; have 11 paid/observed holidays; be eligible for health, dental and vision benefits for you AND your family and earn CalPERS retirement!

Under the close supervision of the Prison Industries Superintendent I (Optical Products), the Program Technician is responsible for using specific Medi-Cal Optical program criteria in the receiving, screening, data entry, shipping, customer service and transportation processes of performing Medi-Cal orders for prescription eye wear and warehouse duties as needed. Employees having regular, direct responsibility for work supervision, on-the-job training, and work performance evaluation of at least two incarcerated individuals who substantially replace civil service employees for a total of at least 120 hours per pay period may be eligible for Pay Differential 67. This position may supervise at least two (2) incarcerated workers in the duties listed below and may input data entry of incarcerated workers' time into SOMS.

Minimum qualifications: 1 year of experience with clerical work. Education may sub in for experience. 

Position may receive a $190.00 per month Institutional Worker Supervision Pay (IWSP) Differential

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Experience working in an Optical Lab
  • Experience working in and providing customer service
  • Experience reading Optical Prescriptions
  • Proficient in Excel, Microsoft Word, and Outlook
  • Experience working with Database Systems
  • Experience working with or around incarcerated individuals
  • Medical confidentiality experience
  • Production experience
